THE DORMAN DISTANCE CARNIVAL BACK STORY…

In 2016, while coaching at Dorman High School, I envisioned a track meet focused on the distance events. The distance kids had worked hard all winter and they were “itching” to get the competitive juices going early, especially with no indoor season in South Carolina. Ten years later, there are more options for indoor races then there were at that time. Although not coaching at Dorman any longer, I continue to serve as the meet director for the DDC.

Our event is a unique opening outdoor track meet in South Carolina that follows a format to showcase many of the best high school distance runners in the Palmetto state and beyond. Started in 2016 with only seven teams, the Dorman Distance Carnival has now grown to 800+ athletes . Our competition is billed as a “scrimmage”…therefore it does not count as a pre-season meet for schools in South Carolina. However, don’t let it being labeled a scrimmage cloud your view of what this meet has become. In essence it has become the “go to” early season opener for many top distance programs and runners. We have outstanding competition year in, and year out, from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and beyond.

The Dorman Distance Carnival features eight different events ranging from 400-meters to 3200-meters, with the marquee event being the Boys and Girls Elite Mile races. Our meet features a true one mile race. We love the true one mile distance! In addition to our Elite Mile races, we have Elite races in the 400 (new for 2026), 800, and 3200 (new for 2026). (See below for our order of events.)

There is no registration fee for teams, made possible by our generous sponsors . However, individuals and spectators will pay an admission fee. We do accept individual athletes…we ask that you clear it with the coach at your school before entering.

Dorman High School, located in Spartanburg, SC has a beautiful Mondo track that is two years old. Links to all previous nine years of results is at the bottom of this page.

See you soon!
